Portugal Elections 2024: Poor performance for the Communist Party, while the far-right rises

Bad news come from Portugal, following March 10 parliamentary elections. The Unitary Democratic Coalition, comprised of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and the Greens, received 3,30% (approximately 203,000 votes), which marks a regression in relation to the 2022 results (4,39% and 236,600 votes).

Unfortunately, it seems that, among others, the Portuguese Communist Party pays the price for its political support – also known as Geringonça - towards the social democratic governments of Antonio Costa in 2015-2019 which cultivated empty promises to the working class but ultimately led to disappointment.

New Communist Party of the Netherlands: Statement on the election results and Geert Wilders' victory

In a statement concerning the Dutch General Elections held on 22 November 2023, the Central Committee of the New Communist Party of the Netherlands (NCPN) stresses out the following:

"The results of the Lower House elections show, on the one hand, the justified discontent and anger among large sections of the working class about the antipopular policies pursued by successive cabinets in recent years. But on the other hand, the results show that there are still many illusions about parties that present themselves in various ways as an ‘alternative’ while essentially serving the same politics.

Referring to the violent incidents that took place in Dublin on November 23, the website of the Workers Party of Ireland points out:

"Yesterday’s appalling events in Dublin can scarcely come as a surprise.

People were, of course, shocked at the horrific knife attack on innocent school children and their teachers , but this was not the reason for the orgy of reactionary violence in which workers were attacked, shops looted and public services and their workers, including first responders, targeted and abused.

KKE: Statement on the result of the elections in Italy

Following the result in the Italian general election and the victory of the far-right bloc, the Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) issued a statement (here in Greek).

The statement reads:

"The electoral result in Italy, with a record abstention and the far-right as the first power, only foreshadows the continuation and escalation of the anti-people policy in the neighboring country. The “anti-systemic” cheap-talks of Meloni, the leader of the far-right bloc, cannot hide the assurances of loyalty to EU and NATO, her alignment with their plans in the war between thieves in Ukraine and the aspiration of the Italian bourgeois class, through the recovering of the far-right, to shield the interests of the third strongest economic power in the intensifying competition within the EU.

“The result of the French elections, with the once again high percentage of far-right Le Pen, is the tragic consequence on the one hand of the timeless anti-people policy implemented by all governments in the name of “democracy” and “progress” and, on the other, of the compromise and degeneration that has prevailed in the labor and communist movement in France.

Communist Party of Canada on "Freedom Convoy": A far-right, dangerous movement for the working class

In a statement about the so-called "Freedom Convoy", the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Canada points out:

Communist Party of Canada views the “Freedom Convoy” as a public expression of the increasingly organized and assertive far right. The clear links between the organizers of the convoy and far-right networks indicate that this is not a spontaneous working-class demonstration. On the contrary, it is part of a global phenomenon: the rise and mainstreaming of the far right, which is demonstrated by the strong support (ideologically and financially) from the US far right and circles close to Donald Trump and the Jan. 6th insurrection.

Poland's Communist Party denounces the fascist frenzy on independence day march

Regarding the provocative presence of far-right, fascist groups in yesterday's independence day march in Warsaw, the Communist Party of Poland (KPP) issued the following statement:

"In Poland, the 11th of November again became a pretext to promote the militarism and fascism. The authorities of the Polish state marched hand in hand with the nationalists. Once again the red and white banners serve as a cover-up for xenophobia, racism, and fascism. Poland's rulers once again use the nationalist euphoria in order to divert the attention from real social problems. The Polish state again gives the citizens nationalist paraphernalia instead of what they really need.

Jordan Jereb, captain of the Republic of Florida, said Cruz “was part of our organization.” ROF hosted a “paramilitary” training session in the Tallahassee area that Cruz attended, Jereb said. “He probably used that training to do what he did yesterday. Nobody I know told him to do that, he just freaked out,” Jereb added.
